We're so glad that our customers are conscientious about plastic use, and we agree that it's important to do everything we can to keep plastic out of landfills.
Currently, our packages are made of 100% post-consumer PET, which makes them infinitely recyclable. Here's how that works...
We are also evaluating our options to reduce our overall plastic use in the long-term. We’re currently working towards a new tub and film seal package, which will be 30% less plastic than our current clamshell and lid. Look out for that later this year!
Additionally, we have conducted extensive research on alternative biodegradable packages such as Polylactic Acid (PLA) polymers made from corn and other plant materials. However, unless you have access to a well-managed commercial composting program they are difficult to biodegrade. You can learn more about PLA here.
Food waste is also something we aim to decrease here at LLF, and we have found that packaging can decrease the amount of leafy greens wasted in consumer homes. Approximately 35% of leafy greens are wasted, with the majority of the waste coming from people throwing the lettuce out at home. Our packaging provides consumers with fresher lettuce for longer, leading to less lettuce in landfills.
