Our lettuce is not certified organic, though we adhere to growing practices that ensure our lettuce is on par with (or even beyond) the quality of organic greens.
The reason we are not USDA certified organic is due to the medium we grow in, as well as the nutrients we feed to our plants. Plants, whether they are grown hydroponically or in soil, get their nutrients from the fertilizer they are given. At Little Leaf Farms, we apply our fertilizer directly into our water system, irrigating and fertilizing our leafy greens at the same time using a “fertigation” system. The nutrients we apply consist of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and many micronutrients. Some of the nutrients, specifically nitrogen, we source synthetically. This ensures we are giving our plants clean and pure nitrogen, with no risk of outside contamination. This usage of “conventional” fertilizer, is why we are not certified organic. In addition, our usage of a mineral based growing medium is not approved as organic by the USDA.
Little Leaf Farms does not spray anything on our lettuce, which is different than most organic farms. Certified organic farms have the leeway to spray certain toxic compounds that are technically “certified organic”. Here at Little Leaf, we implement a Clean from the Start mindset, and never spray any chemicals on our greens. This is why we at Little Leaf Farms consider our greens beyond organic!
